Like many other anglers, my dad taught me to fish. Growing up south of San Antonio, we had access to several farm ponds. My dad has since passed away, however, I will never forget those good ol’ days!
When I was a senior in high school in 1979, my dad and I joined the Big Country Bass Club in San Antonio. Soon after joining, I was elected to the position of tournament director. The Big Country Bass Club had some great fishermen who were more than willing to teach me some new fishing techniques which I still use today.
I have won a few small tournaments in my many years of competing but have not landed a major event win...yet. On two occasions I have come within ounces of landing the number one spot; once with a second place finish as a co-angler in a Bassmaster tournament at Sam Rayburn and another second place finish as a co-angler in an FLW tournament at Amistad. Throughout my bass angling career, I have won over $21,000 in prize money fishing Bassmaster, FLW and countless local tournaments.
One of my most memorable tournaments was a Bass Champs individual event on Lake Tawakoni. In conjunction with my tournament was a junior division tournament in which my son, John, competed. John finished second in his division and I was so exited watching him weigh in that I almost forgot to weigh in myself. That was a proud day for me. My son John attends college at Texas Tech and still fishes whenever he can find the time.
I am incredibly grateful for my wife Cindy and my family for supporting me in this crazy game of tournament bass fishing. God bless. |
